The Green Belt

Hiking rare natural treasures

The so-called "Green Belt" is a valuable chain of biotopes in the Harz Mountains between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, which was able to develop undisturbed in the shadow of the border fences. As the first all-German nature conservation project, it was established immediately after the fall of the Wall in November 1989 by BUND and committed nature conservationists from the former GDR. In the course of time, around 1200 endangered animal and plant species have settled there. A true treasure for nature lovers. In total, the "Green Belt" stretches 1400 kilometres from the Baltic Sea to Bavaria.
