Hike along the Rehberger Graben. A hike through the wild romantic mountain landscape in the High Harz.
The most difficult channel in the Upper Harz was built here: the Rehberger Graben. The channel had to be carved into hard granite stones and rocks blasted. The construction work took 150 years.
The path along the channel used to be the inspection path for the channel keeper. The channel keeper's task was to check every day whether the channels were in order and whether they had enough water.
The Rehberger Graben was important for mining in Sankt Andreasberg. Because the town is located so high up in the mountains, the water for the mines had to be brought here from the High Harz. The landscape here is steep and rocky. In many places, the channel had to be cut into the rock. The good thing about this was: the blocks of hard granite could be used well for lining or covering the channel.
Today, the path is a very beautiful and comfortable hiking trail. The path is 7 kilometers long. At many points, you have a wonderful view. For example, of the Oder valley and the rocks on the other side. Or of the beautiful Harz landscape.
The path starts at the Oderteich parking lot on federal road B 242. From there, cross to the other side of the road to the beginning of the Oderteich dam. Cross the road. There are 2 paths down to the Rehberger Graben there: a steep "natural staircase". Here you can "climb" to the foot of the dam. If you are traveling with a stroller or wheelchair, it is best to take the paved forest road. Now just follow the wide path along the channel.
The path ends at the Gesehr watercourse. There the water disappears into a tunnel from Sankt Andreasberg.
There is an audio guide for this hike in German, English, and easy language. The audio guide tells you exciting information about the Upper Harz water management in Sankt Andreasberg.
