The 4 km long Waldhofmännchenweg is a section of the Selketal-Stieg and connects Alexisbad with the Waldhof Silberhütte.
A total of 18 Waldhofmännchen along this path offer interesting information about forest, forestry, and regional history. Constant companions along the way are Konrad Kauz, the mascot of the nature park, his little owl Raufuß, as well as Josephine Auerberg, who is a sorceress. Together, the three friends experience adventurous stories that they tell us in pictures. But hiking alone is not enough; it also needs some brains: The interactive panels at the Waldhof present puzzles!
The Regionalverband Harz is the sponsor of the Harz Nature Park and responsible for the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen.
Directly on Federal Road 242 at the exit of Alexisbad, the Waldhofmännchenweg and Selketalstieg gently ascend from the Selke valley. Shortly before the Hänichen, the Waldhofmännchenweg branches off to the left from the Selketalstieg and circles around the Mühlöpfe. An almost straight section of the path follows, known as the "Chimney Line," leading to a historically informative viewpoint over Silberhütte. From there, it goes quite steeply and partly via stairs down into the Selke valley. After crossing the bridge over the Selke and the Selke valley railway line, the Waldhof in Silberhütte is reached.
With the Selketalbahn, you can travel back from Silberhütte to Alexisbad within one station. Alternatively, you can hike from Silberhütte another approx. 6.5 km roughly parallel to the district road back to the station in Alexisbad, passing the betrothal urn on the way.
Not passable in snow and icy conditions, not cleared.
Sturdy hiking boots, weather- and hiking-proof clothing
Excellent train and bus connections from start to end point.
Unfortunately, no gastronomic facilities in Silberhütte, but various very well-equipped protected and covered rest areas at the Waldhof. Campfires and grill use can be registered with the Waldhof association.
Also possible as a circular hiking route with an additional approx. 6.5 km back to Alexisbad.
