Walk from the L97 parking lot directly along the Kolonnenweg past the Heiko Runge memorial stone to the Open-Air-Border Museum and on to Sorge over a distance of 11 km. Discover the beauty of nature and learn more about Germany's turbulent history.

Getting there

- from Wernigerode via the B244, Elbingerode junction B27, continue to the Königshütte junction B242 to Tanne, then to Benneckenstein and via the L97 towards Hohegeiß

- from Braunlage via the B242, towards Tanne to Benneckenstein and via the L97 towards Hohegeiß

- from Nordhausen via the B4 to the L98 Benneckenstein junction, then via the L97 towards Hohegeiß

Recommended parking spot:

- Parking spot L97 between Benneckenstein and Hohegeiß

 

An alternative start to the tour is also possible via the Harz town of Sorge.

- Ebersbachstraße parking spot (follow the signs to the parking spot and then the signs to the "Freiland-Grenzmuseum") Note: From the parking spot, driving on the forest road is strictly prohibited!

- Parking spot: Am Kleinen Grenzmuseum, Köhlerbergstraße (former Sorge train station)

- Parkingspot: opposite the Hotel Sonnenhof

Public transit

You can reach the starting point of the tour on the L97 by bus with the Harzer Verkehrsbetriebe from Wernigerode

Line 265 Wernigerode - Elbingerode - Benneckenstein - Hohegeiß

Here you have the option of getting off in Benneckenstein or Hohegeiß. There is a connection to the tour from the respective stop.

or

with the Harzer Schmalspurbahn from Wernigerode or Nordhausen, alighting at Benneckenstein or Sorge.
