The route leads around the Natura 2000 area "Spaltenmoor east of Friedrichsbrunn". It was designated in 1923 and is one of the oldest nature reserves in Saxony-Anhalt.
The hike leads around the Natura 2000 area "Spaltenmoor east of Friedrichsbrunn", which is also a nature reserve. Here on the Ramberg massif grows a very old hay-sedge beech forest with impressive old and deadwood. Rare insects like the spotted longhorn beetle, the tawny owl, and the lesser horseshoe bat are native here, for example. Along a small mountain stream that runs through the area, extensive swamp forests grow. The hike passes historical state borders and the Buttersteine. It is said that the "butter women" once rested here by leaning their heavy baskets on a stone on their way to the nearest market.
The starting point of the hike through the Natura 2000 area "Spaltenmoor east of Friedrichsbrunn" is the car park at the northern exit of Friedrichsbrunn. On the Ramberghöhenweg, the path passes the former forester’s house Wegenerskopf. Up to the junction "Märchenwaldweg", the route follows the Ramberghöhenweg. At the mentioned junction, the path leads left, north, to a shelter. Here, the circular route branches off to the left heading west and passes an information board on historical borders and the nearby Buttersteine. On the last section of the hike, the trail follows the Kaiserweg, which is also marked here with a green square.
The themed route "Along historic border paths" has been described by the Harz Regional Association in a brochure. Available for order at www.harzregion.de.
Friedrichsbrunn is accessible via the A36, B242, and B81.
Parking spaces are available at the starting point of the hike.
Friedrichsbrunn can be reached by bus from Thale, Quedlinburg, and Güntersberge. The nearest stop is "Schreiberstraße".
The NATURA Tip 5 "Spaltenmoor east of Friedrichsbrunn" describes the hiking route as well as the animal and plant species found here and their habitats through short texts with great photos. It is available, for example, at Ferienpark Merkelbach, the Bodetal-Information Friedrichsbrunn, and at www.harzregion.de.
The NATURA Tip 5 includes a hiking map.
