Three mountain huts, two observation towers and all in one hiking day! You should also enjoy the varied landscape. After the folding and uplift of the Harz from a primeval sea, volcanism began. The Großer and Kleiner Knollen near Herzberg are genuine volcanic cones. The 3rd stage of the BaudenSteig leads up to the Großer Knollen and the Knollen mountain hut (687 m above sea level). A panorama-rich destination – in good weather the view reaches as far as the Großer Inselsberg in the Thuringian Forest. The mountain hut has been operated by the same tenants for over 30 years. The hosts keep careful records of how often visitors come up here. One hiker made almost 3000 visits. The stage continues to the Großer Knollenkreuz and the idyllic Lutter valley. Then up to the Hohen Kummel. From the Bismarck tower, on clear days, there is a fantastic view of well-known mountains such as Großer Knollen, Hanskühnenburg, but also Saint Andreasberg and the Oder reservoir. At the mountain hut at the Bismarck tower, homemade cakes and many other delicacies are served with a dreamlike view! Children have fun with the raccoons. In Bad Lauterberg, you should definitely end the day in the Kirchberg thermal baths or the Vitamar adventure pool.
Start the 3rd stage in Sieber at the outdoor swimming pool (S). Then enter the Tiefenbeek valley. Use the first opportunity to the right over the bridge (alternatively follow the forest road straight ahead). Ascend the Gatzemann valley (1), crossing all wide forest roads straight on, always follow the path steeply uphill. Then almost at the top, turn left on a wide forest road to the Otto-Hermann hut (2). On the Knollenstraße past a small hut – briefly steep uphill again to the observation tower (3) and the mountain hut (refreshment stop). From the Großer Knollen (4) a wonderful view over Scharzfeld, Barbis to Thuringia. A short section back on the same path and in the curve now follow the path to the right. Steep downhill, cross a wide forest road and continue on the path (5) opposite through the forest. Uphill to a clearing. Very briefly right, then left along the slope downhill, past the "Brockenblick" viewpoint, until the path meets a wide forest road. Here left to the Hentschelköte (6). Straight ahead into the forest towards Bad Lauterberg, Luttertal, Bismarck tower. At the power pole, left downhill in steep switchbacks (caution when wet, possibly use poles). On a wide forest road then right, towards Luttertal to the old forester's house Hohensee (7). Left before the café, after 100 m right to leave the valley. Tough ascent, then flat through young forest. After a resting bench with a nice view, uphill on the right on a wide forest road. At the Bismarck tower (8) be sure to climb the steps to the tower: Whether Oder reservoir, Brocken or Bad Lauterberg – everything can be seen. A break at the mountain hut is worthwhile (refreshment stop). Past the raccoon enclosure, into the hollow, keeping slightly left, downhill on a narrow path. Continue downhill at the resting place of the heath poet Hermann Löns to the edge of the forest. At Lönsweg right and immediately left. Uphill in switchbacks at the car park to the Hausberg (9) (refreshment stop). Tip: Float down to the town on the chairlift. The path passes below the forest inn. On a narrow path in curves through beech forest. Sharp left at the bell tower until stairs lead into the town. Turn left at Schulstraße to the church square (10), then continue to the guest house or accommodation.
Sturdy hiking boots, possibly drinks for the way.
Be sure to plan a break and climb the towers at Großer Knollen and the Bismarck tower.
