With this hike you go on a historical journey.
Back to where Germany was once divided by an inner-German border with the then GDR and FRG. You will visit the Sorge border landscape, which consists of the open-air border museum (former inner-German border) and the small border museum (museum with border-themed exhibits). You can also enjoy the Harz nature with a fantastic view of the Brocken and Wurmberg, discover one of the smallest and most idyllic villages in the Upper Harz city on the Brocken - the Harz town of Sorge.
The starting point of the hike is the signposted Ebersbachstraße car park.
There, follow the signs to Freiland-Grenzmuseum. You walk about 1 km along the gravel path to the entrance of the open-air museum. Display boards illustrate interesting facts about the border and the opening of the border. You can also enjoy a fantastic view of the Brocken mountain and Wurmberg mountain on the right hand side of the path. From the border fence (entrance to the border museum), continue straight ahead for about 500 m along the so-called "Kolonnenweg" to the observation tower. Various displays with a link to the audio guide provide information on the subject of the inner-German border. It continues on the column path in the direction of the "Ring of Remembrance" and the stamping point of the Harzer Wandernadel.
From here we continue our hike by going back along the flagstone path towards the observation tower. Arriving at the tower, we follow the patrol path to the left, with a view of the Brocken mountain. After approx. 1.2 km you will come to a fork, where you keep right in the direction of Sorge. You walk along an idyllic path in the direction of the Eberbachstrasse car park.
After you have crossed the small wooden bridge, you will reach a rest area with a hut. From there you have a perfect view of the tracks of the Harzer Schmalspurbahn. With a bit of luck, it might be just steaming past you.
Back at the car park, hike to the small town of Sorge in the Harz Mountains. At the Försterbergstraße crossing area, keep to the right, follow the small Köhlerbergstraße and cross the railway tracks. On the left you can already see the Small Border Museum. The opening hours of the museum can be found here.
Continue for about 400 m along Benneckensteiner Straße. Keep right at the parking lot and walk up the small street by the residential buildings. From there you follow the path along the sports field, the beautiful mountain meadows with a magical view of the town of Sorge and the Brocken mountain and Wurmberg mountain. Several benches invite you to linger, have a picnic and enjoy yourself.
After approx. 700 m you will come to a paved road. Keep to the right and after a few steps left again. It continues on a nature trail to the Ochsenbach. Arrived on the gravel path, keep right in the direction of the railway bridge. After the railway bridge you have reached your starting point.
The open-air border museum and the small border museum belong to the association premises of the association "Grenzmuseum Sorge e.V."
Please note the safety and access conditions of the association.
