Small circular route through the village of Stiege along the Lake Stiege directly to the stave church of Stiege.
Entertaining, eventful and relaxed - the approx. 3.2 km short circular hiking trail takes you through the tranquil Harz town of Stiege. Your hike starts right at the Stiege train station (Selketalbahn) with the smallest turning loop in Europe and continues past the Upper Pond to the Lower Pond - part of the the well-known Lake Stiege. Romantically beautiful and a popular photo motif is the panoramic view over the lake to the castle of Stiege with chapel.
With a bit of luck you can see the resident white swans and ducks. Numerous benches invite you to linger. Further through the village you get directly to the new location of the stave church of Stiege. In the years 2020-22, after countless destructions by vandalism, this was "brought" from its original location - the Albrechtshaus, directly into the village. The extraordinary church in dragon style was dismantled and rebuilt, renovated and restored with loving attention to detail.
Your little hike or walk starts at the parking spots right at the train station of Stiege. Follow the signposted Selketal-Stieg behind the bowling alley for a distance of about 850 m. You will then reach a fork in the road and leave the Selketal-Stieg and follow the gravel path on the left for another 450 m with a beautiful view of the lake. At the next crossing area, the path takes you approx. 100 m further along the lake. Then turn right into Teichstraße and get directly to the lower Lake Stiege. Numerous benches invite you to linger. An enchanting panorama awaits you along the Lake Stiege with a view of the lake and the castle of Stiege with chapel - a popular photo motif. A fenced-in playground is waiting for the small children to be discovered and for the big children there is the possibility in the summer months to rent a cruiser boat or a stand-up to drive across the lake. An inn and the castle café invite you to stop by. After your brief stay, continue walking to the end of the lake. Cross Lange Straße and turn left into Alte Breite Straße, which you follow for approx. 200 m. There you will come to a crossroads and turn left into Jahnstraße. After another 200 m keep left again until you come to Lange Straße. Follow the VIA ROMEA signs on the right hand side until you reach the small Stieger stave church in about 300 m. Rest areas and other seating options invite you to have a picnic. The church opens its doors on selected dates, by appointment or for events. Find out a lot of interesting facts about the church and its move to the village of Stiege. You will find another special feature just a few steps further in the direction of your starting point. A special attraction for railway enthusiasts. Europe's smallest turning loop. It is just 400 m long.
