Observatory Sankt Andreasberg

The view of the stars...

A good view

The highest observatory in northern Germany was opened in Sankt Andreasberg in the Upper Harz Mountains in 2014. The project is supported and financed by the non-profit association Sternwarte Sankt Andreasberg e.V.. The aim is to bring all people - young and old, disabled and non-disabled - closer to the sky and to impart astronomical knowledge to them.

The site at the International House Sonnenberg offers excellent viewing conditions:

Altitude 710 m above sea level, low haze air and absolute darkness away from the congested areas.

This means that on many days of the year, for example, the Milky Way or the Andromeda Galaxy can even be seen with the naked eye.

To keep it that way, the association is committed to preserving the night sky and combating light pollution.

According to the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, the location in the middle of the Harz National Park is one of the darkest regions in Germany. In 2011, Sankt Andreasberg was included in the list of "StarParks" on the initiative of the association. In the coming years, we will work to have our region certified as a star park.

Looking into the distance instead of watching TV

Which star shines brightest in the evening? What is happening on the sun? Who can spot the Big Dipper, Cassiopeia or the Pleiades?

Many people have never consciously seen the Milky Way and only know Saturn's rings from advertisements. At the Sankt Andreasberg observatory they can watch the sky by day and night - with the naked eye or with telescopes. The view into the universe is an unforgettable experience - and opens up new horizons.

We impart astronomical knowledge in lectures, offer practical introductions to sky observation, lend telescopes for use on the observatory grounds,

organise events for special astronomical events such as stargazing nights or comet sightings as well as the nationwide Astronomy Day.
