Cycling and hiking experience Südharzbahn

Short facts

  • Braunlage

Enjoyable biking and hiking where steam locomotives used to run!

The new cycling and hiking trail runs along the route of the former Südharzer railroad.

Completed in 1899, the Südharzeisenbahn ran along the route from Walkenried to Braunlage. The railroad, originally created for the transport of raw materials, had to overcome particularly high altitudes. In 1962, the Südharzeisenbahn was shut down.

Today, the former route is a very special experience for hikers and cyclists.

Thanks to the structural masterpiece of our ancestors, the 273 meters of altitude from Walkenried to Braunlage can be cycled (almost) without effort. And almost by itself, of course, the bike goes in the opposite direction.

You can also discover the following sights along the bike and hiking trail:

Local history and FIS ski museum, Braunlage
National park youth forest home Brunnenbachsmühle, Braunlage
    Restaurant "Historischer Bahnhof Stöberhai", Wieda
    Glass and hut museum, Wieda
    Cistercian Museum Walkenried Abbey, Walkenried

Enjoy with the whole family the beautiful Harz landscape and the cycling and hiking experience Südharzeisenbahn.
